“Look, Gamma! Finally, we have found one!”

“Whoooo?!”

“A young wizard! A student with amazing potential… enough, perhaps, to save Wizard City!”

Growing up, “Wizard 101” introduced me to the world of online MMOs and helped develop my passion for gaming. This was a similar experience for tons of kids, and it resulted in a loyal fan base that was connected to the family-friendly deck-building, collecting and turn-based combat.

The legacy MMO has a deep level of nostalgia attached to the brand, but for it to grow in the current market, it had to try something different. In early May 2025, KingIsle Entertainment announced that “Wizard 101” was playable through an Xbox Game Preview. According to their website, the development team saw this test as a giant opportunity to “allow any existing community members to experience the game in a whole new way, [and] also introduce the game to an entirely new generation.”

The Xbox Game Preview had four phases, and I had the ability to play during Phase Two. It was such a fun experience to introduce people to the game in a new format. With the testing being free and quick to download, it was extremely accessible to most people and let people give “Wizard 101” a chance. This aided the game’s development by allowing new and returning players to provide feedback on how it ran and what could be changed to create additional optimization and better integrate a controller.

“Wizard 101” officially released on October 9th, 2025, for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X. There was a separate release for Nintendo Switch on January 13th, 2026. It became #1 in the download category on the Nintendo eShop.

With this addition, the game reached a huge milestone of having over one million downloads on console. With the game being free to download, players will get a chance to play some early content before having several options for continuing the story. Players can either get a monthly subscription, unlock additional areas using the game’s currency, or purchase a $19.99 Arc Access Pass, which allows access to the game’s first major story arc. Arc passes are a new option and allow permanent ownership of the worlds, opposed to only having access to them while you are a member. Additionally, if the Arc took longer than two months for you to complete, you could, in theory, save money.

Nintendo Switch, on the other hand, offers “Wizard 101”  as a $19.99 premium purchase that includes the Arc 1 content, which makes it hitting #1 on the Nintendo eShop more impressive.

Regardless, all console versions share the same servers, which will create long-lasting momentum and fuller worlds for those on console. A player cannot use their PC account on the console since they are completely separate servers, meaning long-time players will have to start fresh.

I am very excited for this game to continue to release content and develop its world, as well as see a new generation of players enter the fandom. MMOs are a great introduction to online gaming, and, with “Wizard 101”  having such a family-friendly model with entertaining mechanics, I could see a new wave of gamers from a younger audience come from the game.

If you are a player with a love for nostalgia, card games, or a great time with friends, taking the time to explore this game could be a fulfilling way to connect with others and learn lore about an expansive speculative world.
