If you’ve ever wondered what actually goes into making a video game—beyond the button-mashing, late-night grinding, and the occasional rage-quit—GDA is the place to find out.
We are the OU Game Developer’s Association—a community of students who don’t just play games… we like to pick them apart, figure out how they work, and then make our own.
So, what is GDA?
Think of us as a creative workshop disguised as a student org. We bring together people from all corners of campus: engineers, artists, writers, musicians, designers, complete beginners, and seasoned creators. If you love games in any form—designing them, building them, analyzing them, or just appreciating them—there’s room for you here.
Game development isn’t a one-person art form. It’s a blend of engineering, design, art, storytelling, sound, animation, and more. That’s why GDA takes a holistic approach. We explore every part of game creation, helping students learn new skills and discover the role that clicks for them. Whether you’re figuring out Unity scripts, crafting a plot twist, or composing a soundtrack that hits right in the feels, you’ll find support and inspiration here.
What we actually do (besides talk about games we love):
Each week, we host monthly game analyses where we collectively deep-dive into a game chosen by members/officers. It’s not just casual discussion—this is game development detective work. We examine what makes a game fun, emotional, frustrating, beautifully designed, or brilliantly engineered. You’d be surprised how much insight you gain from breaking down a core mechanic, a narrative moment, or even a UI menu.
But GDA isn’t just (a game) theory.
We run game jam events where students team up, create a full game in a short time, and—win or lose—walk away with something to be proud of.
We also offer committees focused on areas like programming, art, narrative, or sound, so you can dig into the part of game dev that excites you most. These groups are hands-on, collaborative, and designed to help you grow real skills that look great in a portfolio.
Why join?
Because you’ll learn, you’ll create, and you’ll meet people who are just as passionate and curious as you are. You don’t need experience. You don’t need to come in with a “vision.” You just need an interest in games and a willingness to explore. GDA is all about giving students a space to try things, fail safely, iterate, and eventually succeed in ways they might not expect.
If you’re just game-curious, awesome—come hang out. If you’re serious about becoming a developer, designer, writer, or creator in the industry, we’re here to help you level up.
That’s our motto: We analyze. We design. We create. We play.
Most of all, we’re a community of people who love games and want to understand what makes them great—and how to make great ones of our own.
That’s GDA. And we’d love for you to be part of it.
