Twelve years ago, Freddy Fazbear and his crew of murderous animatronics jumped-scared their way into our lives. What started in 2014 as a small point-and-click horror game set in an even smaller office has now become a billion-dollar empire. From higher-performance games, books, movies, and now a confirmed upcoming real-life location, Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) has consistently broken boundaries and expectations.

Horrifying Beginnings (2014)

Before “Freddy’s” was even a thought, game developer Scott Cawthon was struggling to create a successful game. By 2010, Cawthon had developed several Christian-themed games and adventure titles, each commercially underperforming and financially flopping.

In 2013, inspiration would strike after his resource management game Chipper & Sons Lumber Co. was critiqued for its characters being too unsettling and animatronic-like. Instead of abandoning these creepy designs, Cawthon used this criticism and began work on an intentionally scary game.

On August 8, 2014, Five Nights at Freddy’s was released for Microsoft Windows. The premise of the game was simple: players took on the role of a newly hired security guard for Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Given nothing but security cameras, two doors, and a limited amount of power, players had to monitor and prevent the cast of murderous animatronics from reaching their office.

The game had an immediately positive reception, with its simple but horrifying premise catching the attention of the YouTube gaming community. Given its outlandish jump scares, the game caught the attention of many influential creators who began sharing their reactions to the game, turning Freddy into an internet sensation.

Sequels, Sequels, Sequels (2014-2015)

Shortly after the success of the first game, Cawthon began work on a sequel. Only three months after the first game, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 was released, bringing an entirely new cast of murderous animatronics to computer screens. While the game stayed relatively true to the original formula, new mechanics brought new challenges, keeping players immersed and entertained. But this was far from the end for Cawthon.

Four months later, Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 was released, moving the story into an in-world horror-based attraction based on the remnants of the previous games. The third game added even more worldbuilding to Freddy Fazbear’s increasingly tantalizing history, leaving fans wanting even more from the game series.

After another four months, Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 arrived. Unlike its predecessors, Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 changed the original game formula, now taking place in the bedroom of a child being haunted by nightmare versions of the original animatronics.

In less than a year, Five Nights at Freddy’s began evolving from a simple horror game into a massive franchise filled with colorful characters, mysterious locations, and a story to be solved. With this new and expanding fanbase, Freddy Fazbear’s story was only just beginning.

Into the FNAF verse (2016-2019)

With the first four games establishing the lore and primary gameplay of Freddy Fazbear’s, Cawthon began expanding the franchise, going further than the security walls he originally built around. In 2016, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location once again threw its players into an entirely new environment, taking place in the abandoned remnants of Circus Baby’s Entertainment and Rental.

Along with its new world and animatronic cast, Sister Location introduced the concept of partial movement, allowing players to move through certain areas of the pizzeria rather than staying in a stationary position. With this new mechanic, the FNAF formula took a big step from the first four games’ point-and-click model.

Further development of the FNAF formula came with titles such as Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator and Ultimate Custom Night, exploring how FNAF could be further evolved. This evolution continued when FNAF began branching from the screens to the shelves, releasing books, music videos, and official merchandise.

Steel Wool Partnership (2019-2020)

By 2019, given the massive success of FNAF, Cawthon could no longer continue to develop alone. Cawthon wanted to take Five Nights at Freddy’s further than it had ever gone by expanding into the world of immersive 3D and virtual reality.

Early that year, Cawthon publicly announced his partnership with Steel Wool Studios, with their first collaborative project being the virtual reality game Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted. Released on May 29, 2019, Help Wanted was the franchise’s first step into virtual reality. Now, rather than just watching through a security camera, players were given the opportunity to be part of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.

But Steel Wool’s work was only beginning. On December 16, 2021, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach once again completely flipped the FNAF formula on its head, giving us a never-before-seen free-roam survival nightmare. Marking a new first, players could now completely roam and explore the 3D surroundings of Freddy’s Mega Pizzaplex while also having to survive the new animatronic cast of Glamrock Animatronics.

Security Breach marked a defining evolution for the modern era of Five Nights at Freddy’s, completely transforming the game from its original point-and-click/stationary roaming formula into a massive free-roaming horror adventure.

Hollywood Nights (2023-2025)

Started in 2015 after eight years of development and setbacks, Freddy Fazbear and his crew made their way to the big screen on October 27, 2023. The film was a massive commercial success, grossing over $290 million worldwide.

Despite following several major story points and lore from the games, the film was established as its own story separated from the continuity of the games. This allowed film director Emma Tammi to take creative liberty with the story as a whole while also being able to incorporate elements day-one fans could recognize and enjoy. This film expanded beyond its game origins and created an entirely new world to experience.

Two years later, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 was released on December 5, 2025. Taking both the positive and negative criticism from the first film, Tammi put much more emphasis on the aspects of horror and story, creating a more story-driven experience. The movie grossed $239.6 million worldwide, further evolving the cinematic world of the beloved franchise.

2025-Present day: 12 years later. What's Next?

Twelve years later, the biggest question remaining for Freddy is… what’s next?

The franchise is opening another major chapter in its horrifying tale. Coinciding with its 12th anniversary, on August 9, 2026, the American Dream entertainment and retail complex announced the future opening of a permanent real-world immersive restaurant experience. According to American Dream, the restaurant will be a functional reimagining of Freddy Fazbear’s, featuring arcade games, animatronic stage shows, and an immersive multiplayer survival horror experience. The opening is scheduled for 2027, though no confirmed date has been announced.

What started as pure fiction is stepping into the real world, marking the largest development in FNAF history. Now fans can experience Five Nights at Freddy’s beyond the world of screens.

Major news for the franchise doesn’t just stop with this announcement. On August 8, 2026, Steel Wool Studios teased their notorious villain Vanny with a new glitched model, implicating the possibility of Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach 2.

Twelve years ago, FNAF started as a small horror game from an even smaller studio. Today, it has evolved into a massive multimedia empire breaching into almost every aspect of multimedia. What started with four wandering animatronics has become a franchise that continually breaks its own barriers and keeps its fans coming back for more.
